Effect of OBAs and Repeated Launderings on UVR Transmission through Fabrics

چکیده
The increasing incidence of skin cancer in the populations of Australia and North America provided the impetus for developing educational programs about the risks of sun exposure and for developing sunscreens and sun protective clothing. In an effort to develop better fabrics for sun protective clothing, scientists have completed many studies investigating various factors influencing ultraviolet radiation (UVR) transmission through fabrics. Little research, however, has focused on the effect of repeated home launderings on UVR transmission through fabrics. In this study, eight types of summer-weight fabrics were subjected to 20 home launderings using detergents with and without an optical brightening agent (OBA). Results showed that OBAs used in laundering improved the UVRblocking ability of cotton fabrics and cottonlpolyester blend fabrics, but not fabrics comprised entirely of polyester and nylon. The implication of the study is that a UPF rating determined for a new cotton or polyesterlcotton blend fabric can not only be maintained, but can be significantly enhanced by repeated laundering of the garment in a detergent containing an OBA.

Zirconia based superhydrophobic coatings on cotton fabrics exhibiting excellent durability for versatile use
A fluorinated silyl functionalized zirconia was synthesized by the sol-gel method to fabricate an extremely durable superhydrophobic coating on cotton fabrics by simple immersion technique. The fabric surfaces firmly attached with the coating material through covalent bonding, possessed superhydrophobicity with high water contact angle ≈163 ± 1°, low hysteresis ≈3.5° and superoleophilicity. The...
متن کاملThe Bystander Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation and Silver Nanoparticles on the H2AX gene expression in TK6 Cells
Introduction: The radiation induced bystander effect (BSE) is the induction of biological changes in unexposed cells, by signals transmitted from bystander cells that cause the spread of radiation toxicity to adjacent or far tissues. In addition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) such as cytokines are involved in mediating mechanisms in bystande...

The effectiveness and residual activities of permethrin-impregnated military battle dress uniforms were evaluated by comparing a new company-manufactured ready-to-use polymer-coating method with two "dipping methods" that are currently used to treat uniforms. Residual permethrin amounts and remaining contact toxicities on treated fabrics before and after up to 100 launderings were tested agains...
متن کاملStudy on heat and moisture vapour transmission characteristics through multilayered fabric ensembles
The present paper reports a detailed study on heat and moisture vapour transmission characteristics of different types of multilayered fabric ensembles. Two sets of multilayered fabrics have been prepared. In first set, two types of carded web produced from acrylic and polyester fibres with five different areal densities in each fibre type have been used as middle layer. In second set, differen...
